Wegovy: The Weight Loss Game-Changer

Wegovy

Did you know that over 63% of people in the UK are overweight or obese [1]? If you’re searching for a weight loss solution, you’ve likely come across Wegovy®. But how does it actually work? A game-changer for people looking to lose weight and improve their health; if you’re ready to find out if you’re suitable, take control of your weight loss journey and see real results, keep reading!

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy, also known as semaglutide, is a prescription medication that can help adults lose an average of 15% of their weight[2]*. It is an injectable medication that is a synthetic version of the GLP-1 hormone. GLP-1 hormone regulates blood sugar levels and reduces appetite. Wegovy has been clinically proven to be effective for weight loss because it helps you feel fuller for longer, which can reduce the amount of food you consume.

How Effective is Wegovy?

Studies have shown that Wegovy can be highly effective in helping people lose weight. In a clinical trial involving over 1,900 participants, those who took Wegovy lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared to just 2.4% for those taking a placebo. However, studies showed that Wegovy is the most effective when sustained over time, with participants who continued taking Wegovy for an additional year maintaining an average weight loss of 17.4%[2].  Other studies have shown that Wegovy can also help improve blood sugar control, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve overall quality of life.[3] Clinical trials also show that Wegovy is most effective when combined with a weight loss program that includes a calorie deficit and moderate physical activity [2].

How do you get Wegovy in the UK:

Wegovy is only available in the UK  with a prescription from a medical practitioner. To be eligible for treatment, you’ll need to have a BMI of 30+, or a BMI of 27 or more with at least one weight-related health condition such as PCOS, hypertension and sleep apnoea. You can complete our free medical questionnaire, to determine if you are suitable for Wegovy. At SemaPen, we will consider other factors such as your medical history, current medications, and any potential side effects before prescribing Wegovy. It’s important to note that Wegovy is not suitable for everyone, and should not be used during pregnancy or by people with a history of thyroid cancer.

Does Wegovy have side effects?

As with any medication, Wegovy may cause side effects in some people. The most common side effects reported in clinical trials include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. These side effects are usually mild and improve over time. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and kidney problems have been reported [2]. It’s important to disclose any medical issues you may have and to seek medical attention immediately if you experience any severe symptoms. In order to minimise side effects, Wegovy is given at a small dose which is gradually increased every month, until you reach your optimum dose.
