Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, has revealed that Wegovy is now available for purchase in the UK. But what does this mean for the public, and how much supply can we expect? Read our blog for the details.
In their latest press release, Novo announced that Wegovy will be available from select weight management services, and through the NHS (for a limited number of eligible patients). The launch of Wegovy® offers another option for UK individuals living with with obesity.
What is a constrained launch?
The constrained launch of Wegovy® means that UK suppliers will not be allocated enough supply to meet likely demand and instead will receive smaller, frequent allocations rather than large quantities all at once. This approach has been adopted to protect stocks of the drug and ensure a steady flow of medication to those who successfully start on a weight reduction programme that uses the active drug semaglutide. Novo Nordisk will be “actively monitoring demand and collaborating with regulators and providers to ensure ongoing access to treatment”[1].
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a groundbreaking medication designed to address the complex issue of obesity. It belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists and has been specifically developed to help individuals with obesity achieve sustainable weight loss and improved health outcomes.
