How Wegovy works for weight loss
Wegovy works by mimicking the way our bodies respond to eating.

Its active ingredient, semaglutide, is very similar to a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). This hormone is released when we eat food. It has several effects on the body, including:

Making us feel full
Controlling food cravings
Regulating blood sugar levels
Slowing digestion

When you take your weekly Wegovy injection, your body treats the semaglutide like GLP-1. This means you'll feel many of the same effects, such as feeling full.

That's why Wegovy can help you lose weight. You won't need to eat as much to satisfy your hunger and you'll feel that 'full-up' sensation even when you haven't eaten.

If you take Wegovy alongside a calorie-controlled diet and increased physical activity, you can expect to lose around 15% of your body weight.**
Who can take Wegovy?
Wegovy is available to people with obesity. This includes people who:

Have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30
Have a BMI of more than 27 and another serious condition caused by obesity

You must also have tried diet and exercise without success.

How to take Wegovy injections for weight loss
Most patients find Wegovy medication quite easy to use. Your semaglutide weight loss injection comes as a pen-shaped cartridge that automatically measures the dose for you.

It might feel a bit odd to inject yourself the first few times you do it. However, most people feel little or no pain and soon get used to the process.

How to take Wegovy

Taking Wegovy: a step-by-step guide

1. Do a visual check

Take the lid off your Wegovy pen and make sure the liquid is clear and colourless.

2. Attach the needle

Pull back the tab on the needle and then screw it onto the pen. Remove the top sheath and inner sheath.

3. Check the flow

Dial up to the flow marker (∙ ∙). Hold the pen upright and press the button until liquid squirts out.

4. Dial up to your dose

Turn the dial until it reaches your required dose (it will lock at this setting).

5. Inject the needle

Insert the needle into the soft part of your belly. Press the button and wait for 10 seconds.

6. Wait a week and repeat

Each pen has enough for four weekly doses. It's a good idea to rotate the injection site each time.

Wegovy dosage chart

You take Wegovy once a week by injecting it yourself at home. You can take it at any time of day, with or without meals. However, it's important to take it on the same day each week.

When you first purchase Wegovy or get an NHS prescription, you'll receive a 0.25mg pen with enough for four weekly doses. This is your starting dose.

Your dose increases each month until it reaches 2.4mg. This is your maintenance (maximum) dose. Most patients continue taking this dose for the duration of their treatment.

Remember that your Wegovy medication programme is a marathon, not a sprint. That's why it's important to step up the dose gradually – it takes time for your body to get used to the medication.

What are the possible side effects of Wegovy medication?

All medications can cause side effects. A side effect is any unwanted result from taking a medication.

In Wegovy clinical trials, the most common side effects were nausea and stomach problems, including tummy pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. A fair few patients also experienced headaches.

You might experience these side effects, too. However, they're typically mild and can be managed at home with simple remedies or over-the-counter drugs.

More serious side effects are rare, though they do happen from time to time.
